Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne has revealed Mark McGhee convinced the board he could turn the tide at Pittodrie after re-examining every aspect of his current approach.
Milne announced on Thursday night that McGhee would continue in his role despite his team taking just four points from a possible 30 in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
And Milne told RedTV: "We have spent a lot of time with Mark over the last few days. There has been a lot of very honest and open discussion taken place. Mark has gone away and thought about things and looked at every aspect of what we're doing. His response has convinced us we should be giving him more time to get things going again."
McGhee has blamed much of Aberdeen's poor form this season on injuries to the likes of Paul Hartley and Sone Aluko.
But Milne has seemingly told him the excuses have to stop.
"Everyone recognises there has been a lot of injuries, and injuries to key players, but at the same time I think there is an acknowledgement the current squad is capable of giving us more," the chairman added.
"That's what Mark has been looking at with his management team. His response to that has convinced us we should be giving him more time to get us back up the table."
Milne added: "The important thing is - and what we have failed to get across to the fans in the past few days - the discussions haven't all been within the board. Most of the discussions have been in conjunction with Mark.
"That's the important thing, we have been working on this together to see what we can do.
"It doesn't just come down to Mark, we have been looking at the support we can give him over the coming weeks to enable us to get things back on the rails."
