McGhee: Miller will soon be flowing

After finishing top scorer at the club last season, Miller has failed to find the net in nine appearances since McGhee was appointed to the Pittodrie hotseat. A former Dons striker himself, McGhee has been critical in recent days of Miller's failure to take his chances this term. But he was in more forgiving mood this afternoon, empathising with the 26-year-old's current plight by recalling his own barren runs in front of goal. He said: "I remember the season I went to Newcastle, for the second time. I didn't score for the first eight games and went on to score 25 goals that season. "At Celtic, when I won the golden boot, I didn't score for a number of games but still won that award. "Strikers hit purple patches and they'll go periods without scoring. I think that Lee might be a bit like that - he might score and then go on and get a number of goals. "We're waiting for that to happen but we know he has it in him and we must try and generate chances for him." After shipping goals for fun at the start of the season, Aberdeen have now gone almost 500 minutes of SPL football without conceding. McGhee now wants the likes of Miller, Darren Mackie, Chris Maguire and Michael Paton to start backing up that consistency at the other end of the pitch. The Dons boss said: "If we'd have scored three goals, we'd be sitting in second place in the league. "It's not a lot to ask when you have players like Miller, Mackie, Maguire and Paton. We can score goals but we must find a way of doing that. "We've not been up on the training ground over the last three weeks working on defending, although we have talked about defending as a team. Predominantly, we've talked about scoring goals." Aberdeen are in good spirits following last Saturday's goalless draw at Rangers, which lifted them up to fifth in the table, their mood a far cry from that after their shock Co-operative Insurance Cup defeat at Dundee days earlier. McGhee said: "Everyone was pretty low, they were all bitterly disappointed, but they never let their heads drop and they remained determined and I think they showed that at Ibrox. "We can now make Ibrox a fantastic result by winning at Rugby Park and I think that the players are well up for that. "They've worked really hard this week and I sense there might be a bit of momentum just starting to build and we don't feel we've even started." McGhee has a defensive headache ahead of tomorrow's game at Kilmarnock but believes his game plan can bring success at Rugby Park. He said: "It's usually windy there and it's not a fixture that gets too much attention - so we have to go there and bring something to it ourselves. "It's one of those games where it's about how we start and try and stick to our game plan."
