McGhee: I couldn't halt Miller

Striker Miller signed for the Championship club for a fee reportedly in the region of £500,000.[LNB]McGhee decided to cash in after talks over extending the Scotland international's contract - which expired in the summer - came to nought.[LNB]Miller's departure freed funds for the Dons to wrap up the signing of long-time target Steven MacLean from Plymouth, with McGhee hopeful of beating the midnight deadline.[LNB]The Pittodrie boss felt he could not prevent Miller moving south, adding: "I wouldn't want somebody to do that to me, stand in my way."[LNB]McGhee insisted he was hugely disappointed to lose the 26-year-old, who finished top scorer at the club for the last two seasons.[LNB]"He does make a difference to us," he added.[LNB]"However, some things are outwith my control in that respect and I have to respect the situation."[LNB]As well as MacLean, McGhee revealed he had made enquiries about "a dozen" forwards who were either unavailable or out of his price range.[LNB]He also refused to deny an interest in signing Michael Stewart, possibly on a pre-contract, with the Hearts captain set to be a free agent in the summer.[LNB]"It would be remiss of me to discuss that sort of thing," McGhee said.[LNB]"Suffice to say, I do like Michael Stewart.[LNB]"Any players who are out of contract, we have to consider."[LNB]MacLean's arrival would boost McGhee's firepower for Tuesday's rearranged Scottish Premier League game against Falkirk.[LNB]The Dons boss believes his side are under extra pressure after following up Wednesday's 3-0 win at Hearts with a 3-0 home defeat to Motherwell on Saturday.[LNB]"We will have to play a lot better than we did on Saturday or we will lose to Falkirk," he added.[LNB]"If we play the way we did on Wednesday then we will win, by a few goals I would imagine."[LNB]McGhee believes his side are now over Saturday's result, which he was still unable to explain two days on.[LNB]"I think there was a bit of shock, and disappointment, obviously," he said.[LNB]"We convinced them, at least yesterday morning - if not immediately after the game - to put it behind us and just get back to what we do and try to play better.[LNB]"When you look at your team and how it performs and they win and they lose, there have been days when we've been critical of the strikers or the creative side if you like.[LNB]"You look at that and you point your finger there.[LNB]"But on Saturday, it wasn't about the defence, it wasn't about the back players or midfield.[LNB]"Everyone seemed to be suffering from the same malaise.[LNB]"You've got to therefore say there was a common denominator, even if we can't put our finger on exactly what it was.[LNB]"It's just as likely to be gone today as it was present on Saturday."[LNB][LNB]
