McGhee: Gers record is irrelevant

Mark McGhee will take no succour from Aberdeen's record against Rangers this season when he his side go to Ibrox on Wednesday night.[LNB] The Light Blues are 10 points clear of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League with a game in hand and are well on their way to a second successive title, but the Dons are the only club they have failed to beat - or even score against this season.[LNB]McGhee's men held out for a goalless draw in Govan in September before winning 1-0 at Pittodrie in November.[LNB]However, Aberdeen have struggled for most of the season and their slim top-six hopes finally ended on Sunday when they lost 2-0 at Kilmarnock.[LNB]They also sit just nine points above bottom side Falkirk, which has led the Dons' boss to play down the two previous encounters against Rangers.[LNB]"That's all gone now, this is another game," he told the club's official website.[LNB]"The fact that we have done well (against Rangers) is irrelevant at this stage.[LNB]"It's more important how we are playing at the moment, that's the thing.[LNB]"We can look back at it and say that we maybe did better than anyone else against the champions, particularly if we were to take something tomorrow night.[LNB]"That would be one highlight of the season but that's all it would be."[LNB]McGhee, however, refused to take the blame for a season of disappointment which has also seen a shock Active Nation Scottish Cup cup exit to Raith Rovers and a Co-operative Insurance Cup exit to Dundee, both clubs from the Irn-Bru First Division.[LNB]"The fact is we are nine points above Falkirk which is good, I'm glad and I wish it was more, " he said.[LNB]"I don't believe we will be relegated but I do believe that we are going to have to start to get a result or two and become more resilient or we will go in to the bottom six after the split in a way that other teams might see us as a soft touch.[LNB]"So every game is going to be difficult until we have those points, or that Falkirk lose enough games that they let us off the hook."[LNB]The former Motherwell boss continued: "I do think we have it within us to win a game or two but I hope that the fans would be looking at the facts behind performances.[LNB]"We have played most of the season without Zander Diamond and Sone Aluko.[LNB]"We have only won one game since Lee Miller left at Christmas.[LNB]"We had also lost one or two players in the summer and that has conspired to see us finish where we deserve to finish."[LNB]McGhee is hoping that he will be able to strengthen his squad in the summer to make sure the Dons enjoy a better campaign next season.[LNB]"I've said all along that I'm here to rebuild and strengthen and it takes transfer windows for me to do that," he said.[LNB]"I had no opportunity to do it at Christmas because I had no flexibility in our budget.[LNB]"We brought a couple of player in on loan who have not done as well as we would have hoped.[LNB]"So this summer when players are out of contract and likely to leave, I will have money free in the budget which I will try and spend in order to rebuild a squad that will be more competitive next season.[LNB]"At the very beginning I was asked how long it was going to take and I said 18 months to two years, three or four transfer windows, and at this moment in time we are on schedule[LNB]"So I don't feel any great culpability in where we are at the moment.[LNB]"I think we are just about where we should be.[LNB]"And if we had had Sone and Zander we would have been five or six points better off."
