Macari: Hoops shouldn't fear Arsenal

Tony Mowbray's side warmed up for the first leg of the Champions League play-off on Tuesday night with a 3-1 win at Aberdeen in Saturday's Scottish Premier League lunchtime opener. Hours later, however, the Londoners romped to an even more comprehensive victory at Goodison Park, thrashing the Merseysiders 6-1 on the first day of their Premier League campaign. However, former Celtic player and manager Macari believes the Parkhead side must try to use recent home wins in Europe against teams like AC Milan and Manchester United as the template for dealing with Arsene Wenger's talented team. "It doesn't matter what Arsenal did against Everton on Saturday," Macari said. "No two games are ever the same and it's what Celtic do at Celtic Park that matters and they can win there. "Celtic have shown that they can give the best of teams a run for their money at home and there is no reason why they shouldn't do the same against Arsenal. "It's not that there is nothing to fear, it's that they can't afford to be fearful because it is vital that they get a win to take to the Emirates a week later, that is the key to the tie. "I've seen them winning in Moscow in the last round but it will be different against real top opposition. "It's about getting in front at home and putting the pressure on and that is what Celtic have to do on Tuesday." Speculation on Sunday morning surrounding a possible £10million bid from Tottenham for Hoops midfielder Scott Brown does not surprise Macari and he believes the Parkhead club would struggle to resist that sort of fee. "That has come as no surprise to me," he said. "I have laughed off some of the speculation in recent weeks with regards transfers but I haven't laughed this one off. "Scott Brown is an attacking midfielder, an energetic player who can cover the miles. "These days £10million is not a fantastic amount of money in England and if Celtic have ambitions then they would not want to sell him. "But the problem for clubs in Scotland is that £10million is massive. "There are not a lot of Scottish players under the microscope by teams in England so Celtic might snap the hands off Spurs if the offer comes in." Mowbray will have defender Gary Caldwell back for Tuesday night after the Scotland defender was suspended for the trip to Pittodrie. The Celtic boss' only injury worry is Caldwell's defensive partner Glenn Loovens, who is struggling with a knee complaint. Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee appears to have more deep-rooted problems after watching his side be outplayed for 90 minutes against his former team. After crashing out of the Europa League 8-1 on aggregate against Sigma Olomouc, the Dons have now lost 11 goals in three games. Midfielder Sone Aluko, whose second-half volley was the only bright spot in a day to forget for the Pittodrie side, admits Aberdeen have to start winning soon. He said: "It's been a bad start to the season and everyone is down. "It's important that we get a win under our belts, we don't want to keep conceding goals and losing games. "But we have been here before, last season we went five games without a win but we bounced back and we will do it again."
