Foster welcomes tough training

McGhee transformed the fitness of his Motherwell squad two years ago, helping them move from relegation contenders to the best team outside the Old Firm. Foster and his team-mates knew what to expect when they began pre-season training under the new Dons boss on Wednesday but there was still a shock in store. Foster said: "We did some 2,000-metre runs and they were really tough. It is probably the hardest thing I have done in pre-season. "To do that on the second day was really tough. I think we are doing them again in Austria and hopefully I'll be able to improve my times." The 23-year-old is sure the hard work will pay off when the season starts. "We employ some sports science like squats and dynamic stretching," he told RedTV. "It takes time to get used to it - some of the boys are saying they are sore in places they never knew they had muscles. "But it's all about core strength and that can only make us better. "It's all about power and speed - it's all relevant to football. "I feel I have been fast over a distance but lacked a bit of sharpness over five or 10 yards. I feel this training, although it's sore just now, will benefit me. "At the end of this pre-season this is going to be the fittest I have been. If I improve on other parts of my game, I can only get better."
