Aberdeen say they are confident of agreeing a deal to bring Motherwell manager Mark McGhee to Pittodrie in the near future.
Talks over a compensation package are ongoing, with the Dons seeking a replacement for Jimmy Calderwood.
Director of football Willie Miller told the club's official website: "We have made contact with the Fir Park club and were given permission to approach Mark.
"While subsequent discussions have been extremely encouraging, I've been involved in the game far too long not to realise there are many pitfalls that can affect things at this crucial stage.
"Obviously we are currently attempting to reach an agreement on all fronts as soon as possible."
