Sunderland full-back Dan Smith has linked up with Aberdeen for a trial spell with a view to moving to Pittodrie on loan.
Dons left-back Richie Byrne is currently sidelined by injury and Smith, 19, could get the chance to deputise if he impresses manager Jimmy Calderwood in training this week.
Black Cats boss Niall Quinn told his club's official website: "Aberdeen have asked Dan up for a couple of days to have a look and that may develop.
"We need him to get more experience."
Smith has made just three league appearances for the Black Cats, but gained some experience of regular first-team football during a loan spell at Huddersfield Town last season.
