Aberdeen boss Jimmy Calderwood says he has failed with a bid to try and land Dundee striker Steve Lovell.
Calderwood got in touch with his Dundee counterpart Jim Duffy earlier in the week after missing out on Plymouth striker Stevie Crawford, only to be quoted a price of £500,000.
That is more than the Dons are willing to pay and Calderwood will now turn his attentions elsewhere in the search for more firepower.
"I spoke to Jim Duffy to determine their valuation of Lovell but it is considerably more than we can afford," said Calderwood.
"Quality costs a lot these days as no club wants to lose their best players but I won't sign players just to make up the numbers."
