Dons confirm McGhee as boss
12 Jun 2009 - 11:27:38
Aberdeen have confirmed the appointment of former player Mark McGhee as their new manager.
McGhee, who was part of the famous Dons side that won the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1983, has returned to Pittodrie after deciding to leave his post as Motherwell boss.
The 52-year-old former Leicester City, Wolves, Millwall and Brighton manager will replace Jimmy Calderwood in the hot-seat following his departure at the end of last season.
McGhee will be assisted by current Motherwell number two Scott Leitch and will officially begin his new job on July 1.
"The board was unanimous in the choice of Mark for our new manager," director of football Willie Miller told the club's official website.
"As everyone knows, these situations can be extremely delicate and you have to allow for all eventualities.
"That said, we're delighted Mark and Scott have agreed to join us and, with the return of European football next month, these are exciting times here at Pittodrie.
"Mark is well-known to most Aberdeen supporters and, of course, having been here as a player, he also knows what the club means to them and he's itching to get started."
