Dons boss hails Langfield heroics

Langfield dived to his left to push away the ball and earn the Dons a 1-1 draw after Jamie Murphy and then Brian McLean headed on Jim O'Brien's inswinging cross. Chris Maguire had levelled for the Dons in the 68th minute against a dominant Motherwell side, who took the lead in the ninth minute when O'Brien notched his first goal for the club. Aberdeen, who were missing Zander Diamond with an ankle injury picked up in training on Friday, then had Andrew Considine sent off for his second yellow card. But Langfield ensured they remain four points ahead of Motherwell and Hibernian - and the Dons will seal a top-six place if they beat Inverness at Pittodrie next Saturday. "I thought we might take it on after the goal but we got Andy sent off just after that and it was backs to the wall," Calderwood said. "With Considine off and Diamond missing, and it was a wonderful save from Jamie Langfield in the last minute; it could be a massive save and a massive point for us. "I think it's a point gained and definitely not two lost. It's helped our first aim, which is the top six, and hopefully we can finish it off next week." Calderwood admitted his side had struggled to get into the game before he switched to a 4-4-2 at half-time with the introduction of winger Sone Aluko for defender Lee Mair. "I was very disappointed in the first half," he said. "I thought they caused a lot of problems. The system we started with went very well against Hibernian two weeks ago but it didn't work today. "I thought Motherwell were in the ascendancy the whole of the first half. We didn't create too much, we were second to most balls. "We had to change it and Sone gave us a bit of pace and spark. I thought we were a little bit better in the second half and got a wonderful goal from young Chris." Motherwell manager Mark McGhee was disappointed his side had not built on their position of power in the game. "At 1-0, I always felt we needed another goal," he said. "I think we were the better of the two teams. "We made bad decisions at times when we had the opportunity to create clear-cut chances. "And then towards the end when we went close, it didn't quite go in for us, the keeper has made a good save. But we are reasonably satisfied." Calderwood did not have a good enough view to judge Crawford Allan's decision to send off Considine following a touchline foul on David Clarkson. But McGhee was unhappy with the officials before Aberdeen's equaliser as he felt Motherwell should have had the ball before Scott Severin set up Maguire with a long throw. "The ball was out the park," he said. "I was standing right on the line looking down it and I could see it was over the line before Hammell headed it out."
