Conway happy to focus on football

Dundee United winger Craig Conway is enjoying his football once again now that the transfer window has closed.[LNB] The 25-year-old looked set to join Championship side Middlesbrough during the summer but Gordon Strachan's men failed to meet the Tannadice club's valuation for the Scotland cap.[LNB]United manager Peter Houston felt that some of Conway's performances in the earlier part of the season may have been affected by the speculation but the winger looked back to his best as he helped his side to a 3-1 SPL win over Aberdeen on Saturday.[LNB]He said: "I would be lying if I said the speculation hadn't been annoying me as I was left wondering where I was going to be.[LNB]"I'm glad now that it has all been settled so that I can concentrate on getting my head down.[LNB]"Although we didn't have a great start to the season, I personally felt I was doing well. I am definitely glad that deadline day has passed as I don't feel stuck in the middle and I can just focus on my football instead."[LNB]United scored three times in the opening nine minutes through Jon Daly, a Mark Howard own goal and a David Goodwillie penalty as they won for the first time in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League this season.[LNB]Conway, however, was eager to claim his side's second having sent in the corner that the Aberdeen goalkeeper punched into his own net.[LNB]He added: "I think he punched it straight in but I'm claiming it. It was a good ball into the box but I didn't expect that to happen to be honest.[LNB]"I wouldn't fancy being a keeper myself, having a bunch of 6ft 5in guys running towards you trying to get the ball. If you put a good ball into the right area it's going to be hard for the keeper to deal with."[LNB]Aberdeen boss Mark McGhee said the performance of striker Scott Vernon was the one positive he could take from his side's trip to Dundee.[LNB]The former Colchester United striker scored a terrific volley in his first start for the Dons but his side were unable to force their way back into the match.[LNB]McGhee, who was sent to the stand just before the break for kicking the ball away, said: "I was pleased with his all-round performance.[LNB]"It was a good goal he scored. The problem was we didn't take our chances earlier in the match, before United had scored their first. If we had scored then it could have been us that went 3-0 up but, as we know, goals change games.[LNB]"It was a combination of ourselves and poor refereeing decisions that conspired to see us 3-0 down. However we did not capitulate after we went three behind in terms of our spirit or attitude.[LNB]"If we put the first nine minutes behind us, the rest wasn't too bad."
