Calderwood has Dons six-appeal

The Dons secured their place in the top half with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Inverness today thanks to a Gary McDonald header from an exquisite Charlie Mulgrew free-kick 11 minutes from time.[LNB]Around two dozen Aberdeen fans staged a protest against the current management regime following the match but Calderwood hoped guiding the club to a fifth top-six finish in a row would appease his detractors.[LNB]"We have been very consistent through the years," the Dons boss said.[LNB]"Twelve players left the club last season and we now have a very young squad but we are still up there in spite of how bad everybody says we have been.[LNB]"Jamie Langfield has kept about 14 or 15 clean sheets this season, and if we could just score a few more goals then it would make life an awful lot easier."[LNB]Calderwood believes his side were worthy of taking all three points in a scrappy encounter with Terry Butcher's men.[LNB]He added: "We always knew it was going to be very difficult against Inverness as they are in a rich vein of form at the moment.[LNB]"But we got there in the end and I thought we deserved the win.[LNB]"When we hit the post and the underside of the bar, I was thinking that it could be one of those days.[LNB]"We are going through a run where things aren't going for our strikers but we got the victory and that is the most important thing."[LNB]A deflated Butcher admitted his side did not deserve to take anything from the game.[LNB]"We always felt the goal was going to come for Aberdeen," he said.[LNB]"It wasn't exactly a free-kick out of the blue; we were under some severe and determined Aberdeen pressure.[LNB]"We couldn't get out at spells and we changed the system and made substitutions to try to change things but we found ourselves under a lot of pressure."[LNB]However, the Caley boss, who starred in central defence for England during an illustrious playing career, was frustrated by the manner in which the goal was conceded.[LNB]He added: "It is galling that we have conceded a goal from a free-kick when we have a lot of big men at the back and we normally attack the ball very well.[LNB]"I don't like losing goals from set pieces.[LNB]"We all know that Charlie Mulgrew can whip a good ball into the box but we didn't deal with it and that is very disappointing.[LNB]"It is especially disappointing for me as a former defender."[LNB][LNB]
