Aberdeen boss unfazed by criticism

The 52-year-old, famously part of the Dons side who won the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup, has struggled to emulate former club glories since his arrival from Motherwell last summer.[LNB]McGhee's side are currently winless in 10 matches in all competitions after their latest loss, a 1-0 reverse at St Johnstone on Tuesday night.[LNB]The Pittodrie boss has now ruled out a top-six finish in the Scottish Premier League and believes salvaging pride from a barren season should be his team's sole motivation.[LNB]After also overseeing cup losses to Dundee and Raith this season, fans have vented their anger towards McGhee, with the ex-forward claiming he was spat at by his own support after the recent Rovers loss.[LNB]But he insists he will turn the tide and has no fears over his immediate employment in the north-east.[LNB]He said: "I've got to always look at my own performance and ask the players to do the same, as I do.[LNB]"Of course, I know that I have to be honest with myself, look to see where I can do better.[LNB]"But, as long as I can do that, look myself in the mirror, then I think I don't need to stay awake at night worrying about whether my job is under threat.[LNB]"The amount of criticism I've had in the last month has just absolutely steeled me to do everything I can to change it, to turn it around.[LNB]"What has disappointed me is that some people have had doubts that possibly I'm able to do that.[LNB]"I think I've proven wherever I've been to be successful and I don't see why I shouldn't be successful here.[LNB]"The fact I've not been successful in my first season I don't think is the end of it."[LNB]McGhee admits he has fallen short of the demands placed on him this term but knows the campaign cannot be simply written off in mid-March.[LNB]He added: "I think we are doing slightly worse than what we would have hoped to have done. I think they (his board) imagined when I came here we would be able to finish in the top six.[LNB]"I was given a brief of bringing in young players and developing the squad around that. That process is under way.[LNB]"I don't think we can afford to write the season off, because there are people who have paid season tickets, we are playing for pride, other people are playing for contracts to be here next season."[LNB][LNB] Aberdeen v Dundee Utd.
