Aberdeen boss on Euro mission

Hibs have had a major say in the title race after drawing with both halves of the Old Firm. Only three points for Aberdeen against Mixu Paatelainen's men, coupled with a Dundee United defeat by Rangers, will secure European qualification. Calderwood believes his side have got what it takes to complete their side of the bargain by winning on Sunday. He said: "With all respect to the Old Firm, I think they played into Hibernian's hands by continuing to hit long balls into Rob Jones, Sol Bamba and Steven Thicot, which suited them down to the ground. "If we start doing that then I can't see us winning the game. But if we can knock the ball about and get it wide then, with the pace we have in the side, we can really trouble them." The Dons have failed to beat the Hibees this season and Calderwood expects another stern test on the final day of the season. "We could have beaten them each time we played them this season and, to be fair, we probably should have won all three," he said. "Hopefully luck is on our side this time but we are under no illusions about how difficult it is going to be. "They are a very good team and Steven Fletcher and Derek Riordan can cause you lots of problems if you let them. "They are a big physical team and Rob Jones is very dangerous at set-pieces. They will be playing with a lot of confidence but we are at home and this is our last chance to get into Europe so hopefully we can take it." The Aberdeen manager admitted his side have underachieved this season and should already have claimed one of the European qualification spots - rather than having to depend on results going their way elsewhere. "The inconsistency has killed us," he said. "We started very poorly and then went on a wonderful run but we have had too many draws recently. We should have been in Europe a long time ago. "The underlying thought is that this has been a disappointing season. But we can still finish fourth and get into Europe and, if we do that, then I may feel different come Sunday evening." Calderwood admitted there was something ironic about the Dons having to rely on bitter rivals Rangers doing them a favour by beating Dundee United at Tannadice - a result that would also see the Ibrox side crowned league champions. The Aberdeen manager added: "It is a very unusual situation. But if that is what has to happen for Aberdeen to get into Europe then that is all that the Aberdeen supporters will be concerned about first and foremost. "Afterwards they can think about what else the result means. We just have to do our job and see what happens at Tannadice."
